Whack!!! Beware of the Dame!

mini-P9200169

This morning's breakfast. No one snatches food from another even he/she has finished eating.

mini-P9200170

The only food-snatcher is secured in the cage.

mini-P9200174

Dame Heidi is on hand to see that there is discipline during meals.

A taiqi exponent practises strict discipline - that goes without saying.

mini-P9200175

It won't work, Timmy. You might even injure your gums, so please...don't even try.

Moreover...you're pushing the wrong part. I used the top latch, not the bottom one.

mini-P9200176

Yes, just sit quietly and we'll let you out soon.

mini-P9200177

And he licked the platter clean, as always.

Feeding Timmy Chitosan is a breeze. It's as easy as pie.

Today, I let him out to lick the remaining scraps from Daffodil's bowl. It wasn't much, anyway. The poor boy has been deprived of this luxury (of licking the musical bowls) for many days now. By the time he comes out, all the bowls are already wiped clean and the poor boy looks quite pitiful as he goes from bowl to bowl looking for scraps.

mini-P9200178

What harm can these little bits do, right?

mini-P9200180

But with Heidi watching, he didn't dare approach outright, so he tries with his paw...

mini-P9200182

Yes, use your paws...

mini-P9200183

I sat and watched...bit by bit, he pawed the bits out and puts them into his mouth.

Heidi is looking intently.

mini-P9200188

The moment Timmy started eating directly from the bowl, Heidi snarled and whacked him.

Timmy backs off.

mini-P9200191

And so, what's this I hear about "discipline" that you talk about??

What discipline??

Why are you letting him eat up the scraps??

Er...well, Dame Heidi, your highness, we thought we'd just let Timmy have his indulgence just for today?
Is that... okay....with you? I mean, just for today...? Please?

mini-P9200192

 Hmmmph!!

Well, I'm not happy about it, that much I will tell you, but I will look the other way....

Hmmmph....discipline!!

You ought to take up taiqi and I will make sure you learn about REAL discipline.

Cow attacks Daffodil!

Just as we were talking about cats being anti-social by nature, I must share with you something quite horrible which happened this morning as I was getting out of the room to go to work.

Cow rushed out of the room and launched an fierce aggression on poor Daffodil.

Daffodil has been sitting outside the grille for many days now. After so long, she has finally begun to "socialise" and seem to want human affection.

So what happened this morning was that Cow rushed out, lunged himself at Daffodil and "screamed" right into the poor girl's face, with his fur all fluffed up. Daffodil was so taken aback she did not know how to react and she just froze.

Luckily I was quick enough to pick Cow up (risking getting myself attacked as when Cow is worked up, hell hath no fury like a Cow angered) and put him back into the room.

Daffodil was panting for a good one minute, literally breathing heavily....the poor, poor dear. She was too afraid to even run.

But all is well, no worries. Daffodil had stopped panting before I went off to work.

Here are some photos taken a few hours ago.

Blanket No. 5 in the making (and No. 6 too?)

Blanket No. 5 is going to take some time as it requires a bit more planning and measuring...

mini-20130918_113841 mini-20130919_172131

It's a Mickey Mouse Blanket (with Minnie too!).

And since I was there at my mum's place offering suggestions on the design, I thought I might as well bring home some cloth and see if I am inspired enough to start on Blanket No. 6....

Ginger is going to help me 'coz it's orange!

Life has been a bit of a turmoil lately, so it's good to slow down and do something "different" for a change. My plan is to get my son to thread several needles at one go when he is around, that should be enough for me to go on until he comes back from his flights to rethread the needles for me!

Big plans, I know....maybe I'll just cut the cloth first....

For new readers: These blankets are handsewn and will be put up for auction. 100% of the funds raised will be channeled to our Medical Fund to help the animals.

Heidi's mornings

As a conscientious teacher, she is also a strict disciplinarian. Her student cannot miss a single class.

mini-20130919_074354

Now go on ahead, you know what to do...

mini-20130919_074400 mini-20130919_074404

Yes, this is the spot to start.

mini-20130919_074411

Don't try any tricks...I'm watching you like a hawk.

And the amazing thing is (well, not so amazing since Heidi is, after all, the master, isn't she?) Heidi knows when the sequence ends and just before it ends, she rolls over on her belly and demands a belly rub.

You know, cats have been around humans for at least 10,000 years. And before that? Well, I'll bet before that, they ruled the earth!

Timmy's Chitosan report and other tales

As of today, Bunny and Tiger are OFF the Chitosan. It has been SO effective, I am astonished, dumbstruck and bowled over. Both Bunny and Tiger HAVE lost a significant amount of weight. They feel lighted and look thinner too.

In fact, it is so effective, it is a wee bit "frightening", if you know what I mean, so I've taken them off it and am just using the Hara Hachi Bu diet with Primal as the main meal and Monge as the supplementary meal.

I think it's the combination of Chitosan and Primal that did the trick.

Now, only Timmy is on it twice a day. But even Timmy appears to have lost some weight. The pictures below will depict what I mean.

Now, how about Cow Mau? I'm planning to put bits of it into his meal but will go slow with him since the goop has been so effective on Bunny & Tiger.

Actually, I was a little scared today, especially when my son remarked that Bunny had lost "so much" weight so much so that he asked me if Bunny was sick. So I gave Bunny an extra meal this afternoon. Actually, two extra meals.....which he happily obliged.

Let's go back to the patio cats now...

Because of work, all the cats are fed at 6am every morning. Heidi is almost never around at that time, so she comes much later...

And when the Dame arrives, she makes sure she is heard loud and clear and she will have her breakfast in the kitchen.

mini-P9180168

By then, of course Timmy is no longer in the cage when...you can imagine what a problem that would be.

mini-P9180169

Timmy tries to stare her down...

But the Dame snarls back.

mini-P9180170

So Timmy sits patiently and hopes for scraps (there will be none, of course).

mini-P9180171

He goes closer...(he is asking to be whacked, for sure).

mini-P9180172

I made a wrong setting on my camera and managed to take this shot of Vincent jumping up the table!

Super Vince!!

mini-P9180174

Now, here in this photo, we are examining Timmy's tum-tum.

Is this merely dangling skin or fat?

mini-P9180175 mini-P9180176

It's just skin, isn't it, Vincent?

When I carry Timmy, he is definitely lighter. Previously, he would be "spilling over my arms", but not anymore now. He is lighter and he does not "spill" anymore.

mini-P9180177

Ginger does not need the Chitosan. He is actually very light.

mini-P9180178 mini-P9180179

Well, none of these fellas got to Heidi's food. All the hounding failed...miserably.

The Dame finished her food in her own time.

mini-P9180195

Now, Mr Zurik looks super fit.

He has the physique of an athlete. Something like....Carl Lewis?

mini-P9180198

You two are not so bad yourselves too.

mini-P9180199

Heidi's 4 hour afternoon nap.

The Dame likes pink.

mini-P9180203

Daffodil is much friendlier now. She likes to sit in front of the room grille and wait for me.

mini-P9180205

Chitosan target - On target!!

I look forward to the day when I can announce that Timmy is officially off the Chitosan!

Chitosan report!

It IS working, folks!

Take a look:

mini-P9170196

Tiger looks and feels trimmer already.

He is also definitely lighter when we carry him.

mini-P9170198

Yes, believe it or not, this IS Bunny (the former Bunnyphant!).

mini-P9170199

And I have not even been giving the full dose, which is 2cm three times a day. I have only been giving 1.5cm twice a day so far and I don't intend to increase this dosage since it is already working. I'm wary that it is better to underdose than overdose. My plan was to start off small and gradually increase it to the full dose, but looks like I don't have to do that anymore. In fact, I am thinking of tapering it off for Bunny already, and just maintain him on the Hara Hachi Bu diet.

I'm also reminded of this fact from my vet: If you have a fat cat, a thin cat and a normal cat and if all three were to be trapped (without food), the first to die would be the fat cat. And why so? Because the body will metabolise the fat and this fat will choke the liver. The vet even cited the Petknode tragedy where, in such an unfortunate incident, the obese cats would be the first to die.

That IS scary, isn't it? And we would think that the obese cats would be the ones with lots of "reserves" to last them through? Not necessarily true, according to the vet.

Hence, all weight loss programmes MUST be done on a gradual basis. No drastic measures, please. We do not want any untoward repercussions so it is very important to be well-informed. Please always consult your vet for advice.

mini-P9170200

The Chitosan drop-out, Mr Cow.

I will have to figure out a way to give it to him. For the last two meals, I had managed to mask a wee bit of the goop in his ever-so-tasty Monge meal. Let's hope I can slowly increase this amount to 1.5cm.

mini-P9170202

But of course, I think the Primal has helped a lot as well. I read that raw food helps in natural weight loss.

I have been reconstituting the freeze-dried raw food with water to increase the volume so that they would feel more full. If we go by what Dr Lisa Pierson says, having enough water in the food is so, so important. Hence, she says that any wetfood would be better than kibbles.

Here's what she says:

Diet is the brick and mortar of health.  This web page lays out some often-ignored principles of feline nutrition and explains why cats have a better chance at optimal health if they are fed a canned food diet instead of dry kibble.

1) All urinary tract systems are much healthier with an appropriate amount of water flowing through them.

Dietary water and urinary tract health

2) Carbohydrates can wreak havoc on cats' blood sugar/insulin balance.

Postprandial glycemia

3) Cats inherently have a low thirst drive and need to consume water *with* their food.  (A cat's normal prey is ~70 - 75% water - not the very low 5-10% found in dry food.)

4) Cats are strict carnivores which means they are designed to get their protein from meat/organs – not plants.

Our disclaimer holds. Please consult your veterinarian on the most appropriate diet for your pets. The needs of each individual animal may differ.

mini-P9170201

As often advised, any new food must be introduced gradually and we must observe if the diet agrees with the pet. I started off with just 2 pieces of Primal nuggets (for the 7 of them) and now, I have increased it to 5 nuggets, added with 3 cans of Monge for the oh-so-delicious taste. I figured Monge has no vegetables, but Primal is a complete and balanced food, so this combination should be good enough. I also add wheatgrass when I have supply.

I am told by experienced animal caregivers that when deciding what diet is good for the animal, one way is to go back to nature and observe how they eat in the wild. A lion (who is from the cat family) first eats the stomach and intestines of its prey who is always a herbivore (that's where the little bit of digested plant food is), then it goes for the muscle meat and finally it chews on the bones for dessert. Primal has all of these components in its raw form. It's as close as it can get to the natural food of the cat - about 95% meat, 5% plant food. For dogs, it could go to 60% meat and 40% plant food, I was told. But again, please consult your vet about this.

Back to my Chitosan report...

mini-P9170203

Has Timmy lost weight too?

Well...let's not push the poor boy, shall we? And let's give him credit for being SO good. He goes into the cage all by himself now and eats his meal there. Then, he sits down obediently to wait to be let out.

He's so obedient, he is almost like a dog!

mini-P9170174

I've stopped the Chitosan for Ginger already. He doesn't need it anymore.

He may look big, but he is actually very light. Sometimes, a cat just "looks" obese because of the dangling skin at the belly. It may not be fat, but just skin (to enable the cat to stretch, I was told).

mini-P9170172

I'll get there...just you wait and see.

mini-P9170204

An early breakfast this morning with Timmy in the cage.

The Dame isn't awake yet. She only comes around at 7.30am. Life is good, eh?

mini-P9150191

That's Tabs looking out at the Dame yesterday.

mini-P9150192This is her home now - on top of her taiqi student's car.

The taiqi master shall do what she likes and nobody gets to say anything.

But is she just a taiqi master?
