I'm definitely more excited than Cow, that's for sure!

It wasn't until 6.30am that we decided to let Cow have his "independence". It's been so long and last night, I could see he was already scratching everywhere. The vet said "3 days" and today is the third day.

Here we go, Cow...

Collar OFF!!

You've been such a good boy, Cow!

You're free!

Groom, groom...

Ooh...a nice long scratch!

He didn't rub his eyes (only a little bit), he was more busy grooming his paws and scratching his neck. The other cats can go in and out of the room to the pantry by using the window, but Cow should not be able to do it as the e-collar is too wide for the window grille.

And yet, he could do it.

How does he do it?

See? Good, at least it's not stuck. In some cases, it gets stuck and it needs to be snipped under mild sedation. First hurdle passed, though this doesn't indicate anything at all about his ulcer.

The vet said we have to wait for the eye to open up fully before doing the fluorocein test, which is the acid test, to check if there is anymore ulcer. He wants to be able to see the entire eye clearly.

So we waited...with heart throbbing.

The eye looked clear to me....it just looked a little red, but it's clear.

Oh, how I've miss Cow's beautiful green eyes!

Then it was time for the acid test...

The vet dropped the fluorocein into Cow's eye and turned off all the lights. Then he used the special light to shine into the eye through a filter and checked. Then, he told us to take a look....

The ulcer.....is GONE!!!

YES, it's gone!!

Cow!!! We did it, we did it! Thank you so much, Dr!!

The vet said Cow would still have to be on the e-collar for another 3 days. This is to prevent him from scratching due to the itch from the stitches or just in case there is anything else there which may cause irritation. We are to continue with the eyedrops for 3 more days and that's that. Everything ought to be okay.

We brought Cow home and I don't remember feeling this relieved ever since Cow's big fight with Indy which started everything.

Seeing the world with both eyes again!

The three weeks have been such a trying time for Cow and us.

Cow, you're okay! Your eye is okay!!

Another 3 more days on the e-collar and it will be, as the vet says, "Independence Day"!

Cow also seemed much happier, even though he is still on the collar. I am sure it has not been easy for him, to have one eye stitched closed for 3 weeks. Cow is one tough guy, isn't he?

For those who are reading this for the first time, Cow and Indy got into a fight in December which resulted in Cow's eye injury (most likely due to a scratch). Eyedrops were applied but the cornea became ulcerated after 2 weeks and the ulcer did not heal with antibiotic eyedrops and plasma drops. So, the last resort was this third eyelid flap surgery in which the third eyelid was pulled over and stitched up to cover the entire eye. Cow's eye was also stitched shut and remained so for three whole weeks. The purpose of letting the third eyelid cover the cornea is to allow the blood vessels on the third eyelid to nourish and heal the corneal ulcer. During this time, the e-collar had to be worn 24/7. No one could tell if any healing occurred during this period as there is no visual on what was going on inside the eye. Today, the stitches were removed and the surgery was a success!

A celebration with his friends.

Look at my eye!

Yes, no more playing Pirates of the Caribbean, Cow!

Taking a well-deserved nap.

Cow and all of us want to thank all of you so, so much for being with us for the past few weeks. Today, we shall find out.

Oh gosh...I'm so nervous, it feels like the days of old when exam results are coming out....

Cow is definitely calmer than me this morning. He had his breakfast and here he is, lounging on his favourite chair at the Clubhouse.

Whatever the outcome, Cow and all of us thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your moral support, healing thoughts and kind prayers. We are very grateful.

Thank you for praying for my friend, Cow.

I prayed too...
chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-76052516956253052192015-01-25T04:36:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.743+08:00Cow Mau, just 2 1/2 more days to go!Yesterday, Cow was able to open his stitched up eye a little bit more than usual, so I got worried.

This morning, we took him to the vet for a check-up. Being Saturday, it was really very crowded.

The vet checked and said everything looks good on the outside. It's been 18 days after the surgery, so the stitch is bound to become a little loose.

Just 3 more days to go.... The vet said he could already remove the stitches, but he'd rather wait until Tuesday to complete the full 21 days.

So, we shall wait....

I do believe that I'm more anxious and nervous than Cow is.

Cats are so calm and resilient. I'm a total nervous wreck already.

Counting the days and the hours. 2 1/2 more days to go now....

Why doesn't time fly when we want it to?
chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-86736007036106921652015-01-22T21:48:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.693+08:00Mr Zurik's perseveranceMr Zurik does not give up.

If one were to give him marks for perseverance, he'd score a perfect TEN paws down.

He knows I take a walk daily at the playground. He stalks me there, but in a nice way. The moment he sees me, he follows. Once, he even trotted after me for two full rounds (which is a very long distance for a cat). When he got near enough, he mewed for sympathy.

We figured Mr Zurik has no home nowadays. He is usually sitting outside houses or is at the playground. So, rehoming him is an option we are looking into.

The other day, I saw a lady at the playgound and she wanted to befriend Mr Zurik. So, I quickly asked if she'd like to adopt him. Unfortunately, she could not. But guess what, Mr Zurik decided he would persuade her, so he immediately followed her, rubbed himself on her legs and he walked with her all the way from the playground to her house (which is a few roads away).

I guess the self-adoption did not work out. After an hour, Mr Zurik was back at our house.

Deal didn't go through, huh?

He knows my husband does not welcome him at our house because of the "problems" he creates. But the moment my husband goes out, Mr Zurik will appear either at the patio or even inside the kitchen.

Yes, he is that fast and that smart.

We think he must be stalking our house with a binoculars somewhere nearby. Or maybe the shrews are doing it for him?

And he is so smart that he knows he only needs to run from my husband when he is in our house compound. At the playground, it's neutral ground, so he doesn't need to run. He stays put and even intercepts our path when we walk. How smart is that?

Super smart, I'd say. One would not expect anything less from a KGB-trained cat.

This was taken yesterday morning when my husband was at work.

Is there anyone out there who would like to give Mr Zurik a home?

Please let me know. Thank you!
chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-72744197314334346402015-01-21T04:13:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.667+08:00Deeply touched and blessed by angels without wingsToday I am deeply touched by the kind gestures of AnimalCare's good friends.

You'd remember that 15 blankets were given away last month to those who have helped us in kind, silently and anonymously through the years.

11 of those blankets are now coming back to AnimalCare to be auctioned for fundraising!

I was so surprised!

The friends who have taken these blankets were merely keeping them safe to give me time to recover and reconsider my decision. They just took them off me to lighten my load at that time because that was what I needed. They knew one day, sooner or later, I would continue running AnimalCare and they would then give the blankets back.

That day has now come, and I am so deeply touched by their kind gesture.

Another friend who took the blankets (I insisted that she keeps them) gave a generous donation to our Fund when I announced we were taking baby steps to revive AnimalCare.

Thank you, thank you - for being there and supporting every decision I have made. When I was too tired and could not go on, you all gave me space and time to rest. And when I am ready to start again, you are all behind me, giving me all the support and help that I need.

The blessings that came with starting and running AnimalCare is that I have friends who would stand by me through thick and thin.

Touched and blessed by angels without wings. I know the vet told me that if I can still see the third eyelid (a flap) through the corner of his stitched up eye, that means the stitches are intact, but if I can see his eyeball, it means the stitches have come off.

I checked. It looked like the flap is still there, but I wasn't going to take any chances. There was always a black scab on his eye, but now the scab had fallen off. This got me worried.

So, off we went to the vet's.

Luckily traffic was light, being a Sunday.

At the clinic, the vet (who did the operation) checked and assured me the stitches were still intact.

What a relief!!

Cow was very calm through it all.

I suppose a small blessing in disguise is that in those 2 hours (or so), he got to groom himself to his satisfaction. He must have rubbed off the black scab too. At the clinic, I could see that there is a stitch where the scab used to be. This stitch is still there.

The vet explained that there are actually only two stitches in this operation.

The higher one is the stitch that holds the third eyelid (pulled to cover the entire eye). The lower one is the stitch that keeps the eye closed. Just two stitches.

And two Tuesdays from now, which is 3 weeks after the surgery, these 2 stitches will be removed (no sedation needed). And the vet will examine the ulcer and see how much it has healed.

Healing normally takes place in about 10 days, but to be sure, the usual period of closing the eye is 21 days. In some cases, it heals; in others, it may not. Unfortunately, non-healing corneal ulcers in cats is quite common, the vet said.

We are praying very hard that Cow's ulcer will heal.

There are 8 more days to go. We've already passed the halfway mark.

We don't think Cow intentionally took off his e-collar as we feel he has accepted it and come to terms with it. He also never struggled with it. Perhaps the collar got stuck at the grille and it came off on its own.

Let's hope no other mishap happens...just 8 more days. I am only going off to work daily and not anywhere else so that I can spend as much time at home as possible.

Praying hard....chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-68075597408609529422015-01-17T17:43:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.593+08:00Heidi, my dedicated nurseAbout a week ago, when I was still feeling very ill and tired, Heidi was my "nurse".

In the wee hours of the morning, she would jump up onto my side of the bed and lie down with me. There was one day when I was feeling exceptionally cold. Heidi knew and she wanted to keep me warm. The bolster was in between Heidi and me, but our dear little dame, walked the length of my body to look for a place where she could lie touching my skin. She kept me warm.

It was in the mornings that I felt the worst. I could not drag myself out of bed. The body felt so weak and tired. I was awake, but had no mental energy to even get out of bed. Every morning was a great struggle. But it was feeding time in the morning. Someone had to feed the cats. Whenever he wasn't working, my husband said he would feed the cats so I needn't wake up. But Heidi would refuse to go down to eat. She would jump out of bed and walk to the door. Then, she would turn back, look at me and start mewing.

"Come on, get out of bed, get out of bed, or I'm not going down to eat!", I could almost hear her say.

She probably knows I cannot bear knowing she would miss her meal. So I forced myself up (which was good for me, actually). My intention was just to make sure she goes down the stairs and gets to eat and I would go back to bed again. But no, Heidi would not have that happening.

She would take two steps, and look back at me. And I'd just keep telling her to go down. But she wouldn't go on her own.

"No, you come down with me, or I'm not moving another step", Heidi said.

In that way, Heidi made me go all the way down without going back to bed.

Heidi, my dedicated nurse.

Never underestimate how much a cat knows and what they can do for you!
chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-79528310537817177492015-01-17T06:09:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.548+08:00Birds of the same feather...(baby photos!)We retrieved Ginger and Rosie's baby photos (taken in 2011) from the posts below:

http://myanimalcare.org/2011/09/26/a-male-cat-neutered-francis-tze/

http://myanimalcare.org/2011/09/29/one-female-cat-spayed-francis-tzes/

Aren't these simply the cutest photos ever??

They were both probably less than one year old then.

Their feeder, Francis, got them spayed and neutered and we offered our subsidy. This was before we moved to this neighbourhood. Daffodil was evasive and could not be caught for more than 10 years until we moved here. Then Francis helped and we finally caught her and got her spayed.

If you take a look at Rosie's baby photo, do you see the somewhat fluffy, punkish tuft of hair on her head? It makes both of them look like baby birds, doesn't it?

Ever since then, we've been referring to them as the "Bird Family". Rightly so too, since they are all so fluffy! So, it's GingerBird and Rosie Bird.

And here's more news about Daffodil's family. Apparently, according to Francis, Daffodil has another son from a different litter. From the way Francis described, we know exactly who that son is.

He is Benson: http://myanimalcare.org/2014/06/05/the-story-of-benson-and-kurap-and-maybe-mr-zurik-too/

But he is a prodigal son. Nothing like Ginger or Rosie. At all.

I've observed Benson many times. He's a fighter and a survivor on the street. He hangs out down the slope and I actually see him very often. But almost always, there would be an injury on him and within a day or two, the injury would have dried up and Benson would be on the go again. Even WITH an injury, he is on the go. There was once I wanted to "rescue" him to send him to the vet's (because of an injury on his neck), but on the next day, the injury looked much better already!

Francis says he has not been able to catch Benson. He is tricky and very evasive. Very independent.

So that's a little story about Daffodil's other son.

So, birds of the same feather flock together...safely in our home.

Until now, after four years, Daffodil still looks after Ginger and Rosie. What a supermum!

Benson is okay all by himself. I'll bet he is much happier in his own colony too.

We don't know how many more of Daffodil's children survived throughout all these years when she was not spayed. But according to Francis' wife, most of them did not live through kittenhood.

Hence, the importance of neutering.
chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-70208655490004545792015-01-15T23:25:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.507+08:00Classic Snoopy (Blanket No. 70) - up for auction! We've had an enquiry about our blankets and since we have a few sewn ones, here's Classic Snoopy!

Auction Rules:

1. The third eyelid flap is still intact and there is no signs of any infection. Cow will finish his oral antibiotics tomorrow and we are just to continue with the daily eyedrops at least twice a day. This is to prevent infection at the surgical site.

Since we cannot see what is going on inside, we can only hope that the ulcer is healing with the help of nourishment from the blood vessels in the third eyelid.

The vet says three things can happen when they open up the eye in two weeks' time:

1. The ulcer heals completely, which is the best.

2. The ulcer heals partially, but has healed enough to continue healing on its own.

3. The ulcer has not healed and the third eyelid flap surgery has to be repeated all over again.

Cow has two more weeks to go, and during this time, he certainly needs all the support and positive healing energy that he can get.

Cow on his favourite springy bed.

We thank all of you very much for your kind prayers and healing energy for Cow.
chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-56251208842365265322015-01-12T05:55:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.353+08:00Looking after Cow (Day 6)Today is Day 6 since Cow had his third eyelid flap surgery.

We let him have a walk in the garden this afternoon.

Brother Bunny accompanied Cow, but they went on their own adventures.

Cow was quite reluctant to be taken back into the room. Despite the e-collar, it was a struggle for me to carry him back. He is so strong.

Throughout the day, we give him body massages. We are doing everything we can to make him more comfortable. He has to be on the e-collar for 3 weeks, so it's another 2 weeks to go.

Cow's appetite is very good. So that's one less worry there. Nevertheless, it is still not easy for us to see him having to bear all this discomfort (it breaks my heart, but I have to be strong for him). We pray the surgery will eventually be successful in saving his eye.

Cow and all of us at home thank you very much for your kind prayers and wishes.

chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-82052954192540426652015-01-08T22:05:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.309+08:00Cow Day 3Today is only Day 3 since Cow had his third eyelid flap operation. Time passes so slowly when you wish it would fly...

Cow has learnt to adjust to eat with the e-collar on, but he still needs help, so I hold the bowl up for him as much as possible. All of us have been showering him with praises and moral support, cheering him on. We spend time to sit with him as often as we can. He loves the pampering so that's good.

Feeding him his oral medication is a bit of a problem, but I am managing that. He spits the tablet out, so I have to keep trying until he finally swallows it. I also give him syringes of water since I don't know if he is drinking enough. He eats wetfood and kibbles, so at least there's water in the wetfood.

We are all praying that this surgery will be able to salvage his eye. The third eyelid has to be stitched up for 3 weeks and during this time, we actually don't know what is going on inside. So far, there is hardly any discharge, so I hope that's a good sign (no rupture of the ulcer?).

All of us wish we could take Cow's pain and suffering away. If only we could absorb it, we would. Sigh...

This is Cow's special pink blanket, placed beside me. He spends most of his time sleeping, so that's good.

Rest, Cow, and recover quickly.

When Cow is not on the blanket, Indy takes it. Maybe it's Indy's way of saying he is sorry. But you know how it is with cats - they are territorial and they will fight. It happens, and there's just so much that we can do.

Cow and all of us thank you very much for your kind prayers and thoughtful wishes. We are very grateful.

chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-80634128074740106582015-01-07T04:37:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.141+08:00Cow's third eye lid flap operationWe have tried the best we could, with eye drops and even the plasma drops, but today's visit to the vet's revealed that the ulcer has got even worse.

This was my greatest fear - that we are only left with the option of performing the third eye lid flap operation as a last ditch effort to save Cow's eye.

About the operation: https://www.vetstream.com/felis/Content/Technique/teq00055

We do not know what his chances are at recovery and can only hope for the best. It is a surgery whereby the third eye lid is pulled over to cover the eye and the eye is stitched up so that the blood vessels from this third eye lid can nourish his eye and heal the ulcer.

The fluorescein staining showed that the ulcer has gone deeper and bigger.

We brought Cow back this evening after the surgery.

The area around the eye has been shaven and it is still very swollen right now. He is on oral antibiotics and painkillers and would still need eyedrops to be administered through a tiny hole in the corner of the eye.

Eating is a problem as he finds it hard to adjust to the e-collar so I have to hold his bowl up for him. But it's good that he still has appetite and finished 3/4 can of Monge just now.

This is going to be a very challenging three weeks for all of us in nursing Cow and hoping that this last ditch effort to save his eye will work. I have also begun treatment for my own illness so that makes it even more challenging.

All the cats were very concerned when Cow came back this evening. They gathered around and touched noses with him.

Please get well soon, Cow. If you could kindly spare a prayer for Cow, all of us thank you very much in advance.

For the record, Cow got into a fight with Indy in early December which led to a blood clot in his eye due to being scratched. A corneal ulcer developed later and it did not heal with eye medication.chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-24195421448936267372015-01-03T01:11:00.000+08:002015-02-14T19:30:23.043+08:00Cow's corneal ulcerThank you, everyone, for asking about the cats. Everyone is fine except Cow.

Cow's blood clot in the eye has dissipated completely. Unfortunately, he developed a corneal ulcer during the time I was ill and hospitalised and we didn't know this. Soon after, his eye suddenly looked cloudy one day, so Ming-Yi took him to the vet to get treated. He was then put on an antibiotic eyedrop.

Although I would much rather not put any cat on the e-collar knowing how stressful it is, Cow has no choice now. The ulcer did not get better after the third visit, so besides the antibiotic eyedrop, Cow is also currently on a plasma eyedrop.

We hope he will recover from the ulcer soon.

I do take off the e-collar several times a day to let him groom himself. Two people are required during the eyedrop sessions as Cow is simply too strong (and fierce!).

Please get well soon, Cow.

P.S. Mr Zurik has been dropping in for visits too. Maybe he really knows I'm not well, so he drops in to say hello.

chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-76999367807774934852014-12-21T01:37:00.000+08:002015-01-19T12:27:54.246+08:00The feline welcome-home committee!I only stayed for 2 nights at the hospital; the first night was at the High Dependency Unit and the second night at the normal ward. But for a cat, a human being away for 2 nights and 3 days is a long time. Of course it broke my heart that I could not explain to them why I was gone and I certainly didn't want them thinking that I had abandoned them. My husband and children took good care of all 12 of them, so that was reassuring. Still, don't you wish there was a way to let them know...

According to my husband, the 7 inside cats were fine and did not seem too worried. Only Ginger appeared to be very concerned and kept following him and mewing. He also went upstairs to our bedroom to look for me and mewed. Poor Ginger....

And that is why when the doctor allowed me to option of coming home to recover, I jumped at the chance.

When we drove into the porch, it was afternoon and Ginger wasn't around at the time. Rosie was, but you know how Calicos are. The inside cats had congregated at the grille and were quite excited. Yes, all seven of them and they seemed happy. There was a little celebratory joy as I went in. I was still a little groggy, so I took care in not moving too much.

Ginger came back later and I think it took the boy a little while for everything to sink in. When he finally realised I was really back, he was so happy, he licked me...like a little puppy!

So that's the little tale of my welcome-home event yesterday.

But wait...that's not all.

Someone else popped over to visit too, this morning.

Guess who?

Mr Zurik!!

Yes, Mr Zurik came over to the patio this morning to visit. News must have filtered through the Feline News Network, so our dear Mr Zurik, as militant and as controversial as he is, found it in himself to pop over for a courtesy call. Isn't he sweet?

Cats, when you think you've got them all figured out, they will surprise you again and again.

Cats make the whole go round, don't they?

Thank you, dear friends, for all your kind wishes and prayers for me. I haven't recovered yet, but I hope to get there soon.

As for the subsidy payments, I have cleared all the backlog today. All payments have been made. I figured delaying will create an even longer backlog for me next week and that would be even more stressful. So, all in a days' work and I can now rest.chankahyeinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08674643647557713363noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481340516560332743.post-63100042297806753722014-12-11T01:59:00.000+08:002015-01-19T12:27:54.222+08:00Sharing the Carebears Blankie

We see this very often.
